With lockdown, there came a loss of all structure, purpose and normality to our lives, and as life felt like it was unravelling you might have felt like your eating and exercise pattern was too. If you’ve felt like you’ve piled on a few piles, however, we’re to say firstly, don’t be mad yourself (we are in a pandemic after all) and secondly, it’s never too late to get back into shape. All it takes is a new routine and a new fitness toy to help you - like Nintendo’s Ring Fit.

Building upon the success of Nintendo’s Wii, in the same vane, Ring Fit is bringing back the notion that you can work out in front of your TV, and even better, have fun doing it. Ring Fit even takes the game aspect that one step further than the Wii and comes with new worlds to explore, monsters to battle, and items to collect.

More importantly, it’s so much more than just playing a game of good ol’ fashioned Mario. The hype really is real, when it comes to body toning and weight loss. In terms of equipment, you get two main pieces: a leg strap and a large resistance ring. Each of these connects to a Joy-Con controller to measure and track your movement and quantify your results. Now let’s dive into how you play.

Each level calls for you to come face-to-face with many different monsters, all of whom you’ll have to battle before moving up to the next level. In addition to running, you’ll also be expected to fight the bad guys by selecting from a range of different exercises and completing a specified number of them. You can choose from squats, a warrior pose or planking which will all inflict damage on your enemies. In terms of how many actions you have to do, this all depends on the difficultly level you choose - starting from: Easy:10 / Normal: 20 / Hard: 30. So for example:

(1) Hold high and press x 30

(2) Squat x 30

(3) Abdomen extension x 30

(4) Plank support x 30

As you can probably guess by now Ring Fit definitely falls into the high-impact sort of exercise category. Meaning, if you thought you could just rock up and play in your old jeans and T-shirt you better think again - things are going to get sweaty.

There are 100 different kinds of actions in the game and each one is designed to target different parts of the body that you may want to work on. As for the results, one Japanese mum claimed to use Ring Fit for an hour day during lockdown and ending up going from 76.6kg to 56.6kg! Just like any kind of exercise all it takes is some consistency. Since Ring Fit is designed to be first and foremost fun, you’ll find that you’ll actually be excited to work out and play instead of dreading your daily exercise.
